The Drive for Husky Stadium is in Full Gear

The University of Washington is currently undergoing the “drive for husky stadium”, a campaign to renovate the existing facility before 2013. The $250,000,000 project will feature 25 luxury suites, 30 outdoor patio suites, and 2,500 new stadium seats. There has already been $42,000,000 raised towards this effort, with much of the remainder expected to come from the sale of bonds as well as revenue generated from the new stadium itself.

The Tyee Club is heading up the renovation effort. This group is a non-profit organization dedicated to fundraising in support of Husky athletic programs. Most fundraising efforts are directed toward soliciting donations from alumni and local businesses. In addition to raising money for the new stadium, the Tyee Club supports the college’s many athletic programs, as only a small portion of the sports budget is allotted from the university.

Some of the highlights this project entails include the addition of coach’s offices, space for interviewing new recruits, and team meeting rooms among other things. The field will be lowered to provide better views for spectators and the track surrounding the field will be removed and relocated.Safety issues and serviceability of the current stadium were the major contributing factors that lead to the decision to renovate Husky Stadium according the university’s website. In doing so, the athletic department hopes to attract quality recruits to the college as well as increase attendance at major sporting events throughout the year. The new stadium will officially open with the beginning of the 2013-2014 football season.
