Go Huskies!

Go Huskies!

Tryouts for the Husky co-ed cheerleading squad and the all-female pom squad are conducted each spring. Full-time students or high school seniors who plan to attend in the fall are eligible to try out.  Before the big day, candidates may attend an informational meeting, a tryout clinic, or observe one of the practices in order to help them prepare.

Prospective cheerleaders are evaluated on various stunts as well as a dance routine. They must also complete basic tumbling requirements before they are selected.  Male candidates must be able to do the motions to the Husky fight song as well. Both male and female athletes should adhere to the standards of dress and grooming required by this club. This includes black shorts or pants and proper footwear. Females are encouraged to sport “game day” makeup and hairstyles, while males are required to be clean-shaven during their tryouts.

The pom squad requirements mainly involve dancing ability. This is because this group normally dances during the game rather than leading the crowd in cheers. Even so, knowing some cheer motions and having the ability to lead cheers by holding up signs is still necessary.

In addition to its cheerleading and pom squads, the Washington Huskies also have a mascot to help root them on.  This husky dog is affectionately known as “Harry” and can be booked for events outside the sports arena as well. Those who are interested in hiring Harry to perform should contact the University of Washington athletic administration for more information.
