Lady Huskies Ready for Post-Season Play

The University of Washington’s Lady Husky basketball team is officially in post-season play. The team was selected to compete in the Women’s National Invitational Tournament (WNIT), a tournament that allows college teams from across the nation to compete for a national title. Rounds officially begin on March 14, 2012 at which time the Huskies will Cal Poly, the regular season champion of the Big West tournament.

The 2011-2012 regular season saw the Lady Huskies achieving an overall standing of 17 wins and 13 losses. This is the team’s first winning season in several years, which means that it is also their first appearance in a post-season tournament in some time. Washington’s women last played in a tournament in 2010 when they squared off in the Women’s Basketball Invitational (WBI). They last appeared in the WNIT in 2004.

This year’s winning season is marked by four wins out of the last six games. If the Huskies win their game on Wednesday, they could find themselves in a rematch against Utah. This team beat the Huskies earlier in the season, so an opportunity to play them again would be a welcome occasion. Utah will face off against Utah State on the opening night of the WNIT tournament.

The Women’s NIT was established in 1998 in order to offer the same opportunity for female basketball teams to compete in post-season tournaments as their male counterparts. In that year, Penn State narrowly beat Baylor to take the championship title. This year, the Lady Huskies hope they can make history by winning the school’s first ever WNIT title.
